Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

"A quitter never wins and a winner never quits.” ~ Napoleon Hill

In Hill’s Think and Grow Rich Book, he inspiringly shares his high-yielding philosophy of self-improvement and soul-inspiring knowledge of basic secrets of Success. Think and Grow Rich has been the true source of encouragement for living life in more extraordinarily and exceedingly ways for millions of thousands of lives across the globe. He beautifully mentions that whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve. Great!!! Besides, the book contains money-making secrets and basis.
The creditable story behind the book is, Napoleon Hill, the author had spent twenty years of his life determinedly studying the life of the greatest and the most successful people in various departments of life and this book is the fruition of his twenty years research. He was so curious to know that he was able to reveal the secrets of heightening towards greatness.

In this book, he writes “Thirteen Steps towards Riches,” those are really big, baronial and awe-inspiring for every individual who desires to live life in much incongruous ways. These thirteen
steps are the basic guiding principles for the alternative lifestyle and they are:

1. Desire: The Starting Point of All Achievement
2. Faith: Visualization of, and Belief in Attainment of Desire
3. Autosuggestion: The Medium for Influencing the Subconscious Mind
4. Specialized Knowledge: Personal Experiences or Observation
5. Imagination: The Workshop of Mind
6. Organized Planning: The Crystallization of Desire into Action
7. Decision: The Mastery of Procrastination
8. Persistence: The Sustained Effort Necessary to Induce Faith
9. Power of Mastermind: The Driving Force
10. The Mystery of Sex Transmutation
11. The Subconscious Mind: The Connecting Link
12. The Brain: A Broadcasting and Receiving Station for Thought
13. The Sixth Sense: The Door to the Temple of Wisdom
The above thirteen guiding principles are like a chain where each one is a ring which must be connected enthusiastically to strengthen the purpose of walking ahead.

1. Desire: The Starting Point of All Achievement;
Desire is the nucleus of the cell, therefore it is a point from where the journey of success begins. I would say desire gives birth to all the achievements. A man cannot head ahead if he desires not nor achieve anything in its absence. Everybody have at least a desire towards everything and this desire is the one that make up the story of every individual.

Hill narrates a story of Edwin C. Barnes who had nothing apart from a desire to have business with the greatest inventor Thomas A. Edison. Despite his poverty, with sheer hard work and constant determination, he was able to achieve his giant goals. He happily becomes a business associate of Edison.

2. Faith: Visualization of, and Belief in Attainment of Desire
Once one has desired, one must have full faith and believe on it that one can really do it and reap it, no matter what. There must not be any doubt or fear on acquiring it. One must constantly visualize one's desire everyday, every time, any where.

Napoleon Hill defines Faith as a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of auto suggestion. Hill says that Faith is the head chemist of the mind, when it is blended with thought, the subconscious mind instantly picks up the vibration, translates it into its spiritual equivalent, and transmits it to Infinite Intelligence, as in the case of prayers.

3. Autosuggestion:  The Medium for Influencing the Subconscious Mind
Autosuggestion is suggestion that you give to yourself through repeated affirmation or visualization either positive or negative. It is wheel of the subconscious mind that takes us to either roads : true or false path. Once you give autosuggestion to yourself enough to influence the subconscious mind, it will take its form and yield the desired results.

Here thinking positive thoughts plays huge role as it means that you are giving positive suggestion to your mind to yield positive result but remember negative will give negative results. Our subconscious mind cannot differentiate good or bad, so always be mindful to give positive affirmation to yourself.

4. Specialized Knowledge: Personal Experiences or Observation
Personal experience is always bitter but its fruit is worth an inspiration. Experiences plays vital role in living and doing the things as they are the guidebook to our ways ahead. I always remember Rita Mae Brown's words, "Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement."

I feel important to know Hill's definition for an educated man: An educated man is not, necessarily, one who has an abundance of general knowledge or specialized knowledge. An educated man is one who has so developed the faculties of his mind that he may acquire anything he wants, or its equivalent, without violating the right of others. Finely mentioned!

5. Imagination: The Workshop of Mind
I have heard someone instructing me to put little apostrophe between the letters 'I' and 'm' in the word 'Impossible' which will be melted to 'I'm possible,' which means nothing is impossible. I am speechless with Hill's explanation on Impossible:
It has been said that man can create anything which he can imagine. Through the aid of his imaginative faculty, man has discovered and harnessed, more of nature's forces during the past fifty years than during the entire history of the human race, previous to that time. He has conquered the air so completely that the birds are a poor match for him in flying. He has analyzed, and weighed the sun at a distance of millions of miles, and has determined, through the aid of imagination, the elements of which it consists. He has increased the speed of locomotion, until he may now travel at a speed of more than six hundred miles an hour.

Man's only limitation, within reason, lies in his development and use of his imagination. He has not yet reached the apex of development in the use of his imaginative faculty. He has merely discovered that he has an imagination, and has commenced to use it in a very elementary way.

The more I read the above lines the more encouraged I become. Though our mind is mystery, its power is unlimited and I believe that everything is just stored in our minds from where we can get everything through perfect procedures.

6. Organized Planning: The Crystallization of Desire into Action
Planning is all-important for the things to happen because "Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now," as mentioned by Alan Lakein, otherwise "A goal without a plan is just a wish," as noted by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, so I add, wishes are useless unless put into action through proper planning.

If you want to have smooth path to be travelled everything needs to be planned systematically because best thing will turn out to be worst in case of failure of planning. Hill says, "Money without brains is always dangerous. Properly used, it is the most important essential of civilization."

7. Decision: The Mastery of Procrastination
Paulo Coelho puts beautifully, "Making a decision is only the beginning of things." Once the choices are plenty and available, one must have will to exercise the choices introspectively. For superb corollary requires superb decisions.

8. Persistence: The Sustained Effort Necessary to Induce Faith
Persistence is an ability of a man to do the things determinedly withstanding any obstacles through constant effort. Majority of us get discouraged and give up at the first sign of temporary failure. Only a few persistent and consistent men move forward, until they attain their dreams and this is the reason why many of us become the victim of permanent failure in life and keep on failing. Constant and unwavering efforts are compulsorily required for an abiding happiness. The more we suffer the more we will have.

9. Power of Mastermind: The Driving Force
This is little bit complicated to understand and even to believe. Hill defines mastermind as: "Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose." As an old allusion says, "United we stand, divided we fall," master mind applies this rule in terms of combining metal powers for two is always better than one. Our mind is a form of energy, a part of it being spiritual in nature can be combined, Hill notes, " No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third mind, invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind."

10. The Mystery of Sex Transmutation: The Secret of Sexual Energy
I feel it's decisive for everyone of us to know this secret powerful sexual energy that resides within us which can be transmuted into more desirable forms. Channelling and directing this energy to other desirable directions may prove to be more power than just a reproduction.
Hill mentions three constructive potentialities of emotion of sex. They are:
1. The perpetuation of mankind.
2. The maintenance of health (as a therapeutic agency, it has no equal).
3. The transformation of mediocrity into genius through transmutation.

11. The Subconscious Mind: The Connecting Link
Our mind has dual nature: Conscious Mind and Subconscious Mind. Conscious minds controls our everyday action(voluntary actions), all the things we perceive through five senses and it is active during day time only, while subconscious minds controls involuntary actions and is active all the hours. Besides, subconscious mind has unlimited potential that can take us to higher heights towards Infinite Intelligence if properly directed and used.

12. The Brain: A Broadcasting and Receiving Station for Thought

13. The Sixth Sense: The Door to the Temple of Wisdom
Hill explains: The sixth sense is that portion of the subconscious mind which has been referred to as the creative imagination. It has also been referred to as the "receiving set" through which ideas, plans, and thoughts flash into the mind. The flashes are sometimes called hunches or inspirations.

I have read 'Think and Grow Rich' only several times and it's complicated to understand but through constant effort and repeated reading I am sure that one will be able to understand the book. Moreover, the purpose of this book will be realistic if and only if we implement the given ideas in our day to day life.
